Description

Porgy (The Theatre Guild, 1932). Theatre Production Window Card (13.5" X 22").
This window card is from Porgy: A Play in Four Acts by Dorothy Heyward and DuBose Heyward from the short novel by Dubose. The play was first produced by the Theatre Guild and presented October 10, 1927 - August 1928 at the Guild Theatre in New York City. The play ran a total of 55 weeks in New York, and the original cast toured the United States twice and performed for 11 consecutive weeks in London. Unusual for the time, the cast was entirely African American at the request of its authors. The play tells the story of Porgy, a disabled African American beggar who lives in the slums of Charleston, South Carolina. It relates his efforts to rescue Bess, the woman he loves, from Crown, her violent and possessive lover, and a drug dealer called Sporting Life. The play is the basis of the libretto of the opera Porgy and Bess written in 1934 by DuBose Heyward and Ira Gershwin with music composed by George Gershwin. This rare window card is from the 1932 tour of the play, performed in Baltimore's Ford's Theatre. Artwork by Simonson and printed by Carey and Sons Litho. There is a horizontal fold at the center, a bottom right corner bend, and foxing. Folded, Fine/Very Fine.
