Stagecoach (United Artists, 1939). Fine+ on Linen. One Sheet (27" X 41").
A top find for collectors, this one sheet is certainly one of the rarest of the movie poster hobby. John Ford directs John Wayne and a wonderful cast of stars in his classic Western drama. At this time in his career, Wayne was a "B" Western star which meant nothing in the eyes of Hollywood and "A" pictures. Ford had to fight for Wayne during casting, as producer Walter Wanger refused to cast an actor with little box-office pull. Ford won out, of course, but only John Carradine earned a lesser salary than the Duke. Wayne's image was not exactly marketable at the time either, so this one sheet does not feature him. It is, however, quite stunning. Rich, stone-litho colors and professional restoration make this poster an exceptional collecting opportunity. Touchup was applied to the folds, pinholes in the corners and background and small paper loss at the top crossfolds. From .75" to 1" of missing paper in the top border and approx. .5" bottom border have been re-created, as well as a small chip in the center right border. The poster now presents beautifully overall.
