Description

Gone with the Wind (MGM, R-1967). Very Fine. Six Sheet (79.75" X 79.75"). Howard Terpning Artwork.
As popular as 1939 material is for Gone With the Wind, most collectors would concede that Howard Terpning's key art for the film's 1967 reissue is vastly superior to the designs from the original campaign. An accomplished poster artist, Terpning was also a major success with his fine art paintings, most depicting historical Western scenes of Native American life, which have repeatedly realized 7-figures at auction. He brought that talent and reverence for the past to bear on his dramatic portrait of Clark Gable as Rhett Butler and Vivien Leigh as Scarlett O'Hara, the centerpiece of a dynamic composition depicting the burning of Atlanta. This image has effectively replaced the original poster art in the public's imagination and become the central representation of the film. Roger Kastel borrowed Terpning's tableau for The Empire Strikes Back's Style A one sheet, and the poster is affectionately known as the "Gone With the Wind" style because of it. Flat folded, the poster exhibits some fold separation to one panel, a minor edge tear, and faint marginal toning. Completely unused, the colors are vibrant and the piece would look spectacular on the wall of anyone's Tara.
