Description
Flesh and the Devil (MGM, 1926). Very Good+ on Linen. One Sheet (27" X 41").Flesh and the Devil, directed by Clarence Brown, is a pivotal silent romantic drama that stars John Gilbert, Greta Garbo, and Lars Hanson. The story centers on Leo (Gilbert), a young soldier whose lifelong friendship with Ulrich (Hanson) is strained when he becomes romantically involved with the seductive Felicitas (Garbo), who is already married. Their passionate affair leads to betrayal, jealousy, and tragedy as Leo's love for Felicitas threatens both his honor and his friendship with Ulrich.
The film is notable for its stunning cinematography and its exploration of forbidden love, which was groundbreaking for its time. It also played a key role in launching Greta Garbo to stardom, thanks in part to her intense on-screen chemistry with Gilbert. Their romance captivated audiences and became one of Hollywood's legendary pairings. Flesh and the Devil is also significant for showcasing director Clarence Brown's skill in creating emotionally charged, visually striking films, solidifying his place as one of the leading directors of the era.
This gorgeous stone litho one-sheet is a first-time offering from Heritage Auctions. Depicting Garbo and Gilbert in the throes of passion against a vibrant green background, it is sure to be a highlight of any collection of early cinema. It exhibits edge nicks, several significant tears, paper thins, airbrushed borders and background, touchup along the folds, paper loss in Gilbert, and doubled fold lines. Professional restoration has done a lot to mitigate all of these faults, and the resulting poster is absolutely stunning. An iconic and incredibly rare piece. Property from a Distinguished Collection.
