With a budget of nearly $3 million, making it the most expensive film in the history at Fox at the time, this adaptation of Kathleen Winsor's sensational and controversial novel of the same name was initially condemned by Cardinal Spellman and the National Legion of Decency. Though the Hays office initially condemned the novel, the studio faced the threat of Catholic boycotts which lead many theaters to withdraw from exhibition upon release. Despite this, the Technicolor picture was a success as a result of many Preminger retooling's and Linda Darnell winning the lead after Peggy Cummins was deemed too inexperienced for the role. Publicity compared the film to Gone with the Wind, and was nominated for the Oscar for Best Original Score. A Heritage first, this Italian poster features a stunning illustration by Alfredo Capitani and displays light edge and fold wear, torn pinholes, and subtle edge toning.
