Description

A Day at the Races (MGM, 1937). Fine- on Paper. Insert (14" X 36.5"). Al Hirschfeld Artwork.
A Day at the Races, the Marx Brothers' second collaboration with MGM, is often considered one of their finest cinematic achievements. Much like its predecessor, A Night at the Opera, the film's comedic timing and gags were finely tuned through a vaudeville roadshow prior to filming, ensuring a polished and tightly paced final product. Tragically, the production was overshadowed by the unexpected death of producer Irving Thalberg, a visionary figure who had persuaded the Marx Brothers to transition from Paramount to MGM. Thalberg had served as their most influential advocate within the studio system, and his absence marked a turning point. Many film historians argue that the brothers' later work suffered from the loss of his strategic guidance and creative support. This particular piece features striking caricatures of the Marx Brothers by noted illustrator and frequent collaborator Al Hirschfeld. Memorabilia from this era of their career remains exceptionally rare and highly desirable among collectors. This insert has repaired tears, airbrushed borders, and the corners have been replaced. A small portion of the country of origin text at the bottom has been painted in. Presents very nicely.
