Description
The Outlaw (20th Century Fox, 1952). Fine/Very Fine on Linen. First Release Japanese B2 (20.25" X 29").Few films have as much legend surrounding them as The Outlaw. A then-controversial Western drama directed by Howard Hughes, the film is known for how it pushed the envelope in its overt portrayal of sexuality. The film centers on a love triangle involving Billy the Kid (Jack Buetel), Doc Holliday (Walter Huston), and Rio, played by Jane Russell in her breakout role. Hughes famously sparked a media frenzy by designing a specially engineered bra to accentuate Russell's figure, even though she later claimed never to have worn it, instead fashioning a similar effect through padding of her own to avoid the discomfort Hughes's creation caused. Hughes's determination to display Russell's voluptuous figure led to clashes with industry censors and citizens' groups, delaying the film's full release for several years. Despite its initial controversy, The Outlaw became a cult classic, remembered for its boldness, iconic performances, and Hughes' obsessive attention to technical and marketing details. Offered here is a first release Japanese B2, which brilliantly showcases Russell and the overt sensuality of her character. Touchup along the folds throughout has corrected fold wear as well as small crossfold separation. Additionally, airbrushing and touchup within the upper black background and title treatment has addressed fold wear, pinholes and pinhole chips/tears, a few tears, and a couple of minor chips which have been further addressed by replacement.
