Description
The Branding Iron & Midnight Sun (Goldwyn, 1920/ Universal, 1926). Very Fine+. Lobby Cards (2) (11" X 14").In the leading lobby card, The Branding Iron, Pierre Landis is jealous of his young wife Joan, and in a fit of jealousy, takes the most extreme measure and brands her with an iron. She is rescued by Prosper Gael, a playwright, who is forced to shoot Pierre. He takes Joan to his secluded retreat, and tells her that he has killed Pierre. What Joan doesn't know is that Prosper is secretly writing a play based on her life -- and, furthermore, that Pierre isn't really dead. The Midnight Sun, the second lobby card offered in this lot, stars Laura La Plante, who as "Olga The Midnight Sun Morova" benefits from the influence of Ivan Kusmin (George Siegmann), a powerful Russian banker, to advance from the ranks of the Imperial Russian Ballet to prima ballerina. The relatively brief (one minute) Ballet of Jewel's sequence, running 109 feet, was filmed in 2-strip Technicolor. These cards from two different films distinctly depict two of the most intense scenes of abuse to be found on silent-era classic movie publicity materials of any kind. Midnight Sun bears two background tack holes, and a small upper left corner crease, but otherwise is virtually free of any other signs of age or handling. Branding Iron shows a few light, thin surface rubs, only clearly visible in crosslight, faint corner creases, a very minor border stain near upper left corner, and a miniscule edge chip at lower left corner. This card measures just a trace under 14" wide, though does not appear to be trimmed.
