Description
The Life of Buffalo Bill (Pawnee Bill Film Co., 1912). Folded, Very Fine-. Three Sheet (42" X 81").One of the most prominent figures in the American myth of the Old West is that of William F. Cody, better known as Buffalo Bill. To capitalize on his (largely fictional) background, he founded Buffalo Bill's Wild West and Congress of Rough Riders of the World, an elaborate show that sought not only to entertain spectators, but also provide them with an education on the American West. The show included many horse-culture groups from US military and cowboys to Native Americans, gauchos, Turks and Mongols, and also included many headlining performers, among them Annie Oakley, Calamity Jane, and the legendary Sitting Bull. The show was a smashing success and traveled not only across America, but toured Europe several times as well, even performing for Queen Victoria. An important and influential celebrity of the early 20th century, Cody also branched into the burgeoning art of film, starring as himself in films including this fictionalized biography of his life (where he played himself, except of course as a child). This excellent three sheet (likely the only surviving example) returns to Heritage, showcasing stunning stone litho artwork with imagery that defines the Western genre. In remarkable condition for an unrestored poster of its age, the poster shows slight tears in the borders, minor fold wear, minor foxing, and some paper loss in the lower right border of the top panel.
Heritage Auctions provides as much information as possible but strongly encourages in-person inspection.
