Description

Star Wars: Sounds of Space (20th Century Fox, 1977). Very Fine- on Linen. Poster (16" x 20.25"). Ralph McQuarrie Artwork.
Extremely rare, this poster by Ralph McQuarrie was created to promote a concert series in Northern California organized by Star Wars producer Gary Kurtz to benefit the Marin Waldorf School, which his children attended. The April 1978 concerts included selections from Star Wars, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, 2001: A Space Odyssey, and Flash Gordon as performed by a 100-piece symphony orchestra conducted by Hugo Rinaldi. During the Star Wars portion of the evening, John Williams himself picked up the baton. Given this was a relatively small regional event, advertising was localized and original material for the concerts is scarce. Backed to linen, the poster received touchup to moderate creasing in the lower image and background area and hairline corner tears. If you search YouTube for "Creature Features Bob Wilkins Interview with Gary Kurtz," you can see period video of Kurtz promoting the concert and specifically talking about this poster.
