Description

The Life and Passion of Jesus Christ (Mayo Film, ca. 1930). Folded, Fine. Argentinean One Sheet (29" X 43.25").
The Life and Passion of Jesus Christ is one of the earliest cinematic depictions of the life of Jesus, produced by the French studio Pathé and directed by Ferdinand Zecca and Lucien Nonguet. Utilizing the delicate stencil-color process of Pathéchrome, the film presents a series of beautifully staged tableaux that dramatize key events from Christ's birth to his resurrection. Each scene is introduced by an inter-title bearing the traditional name of the biblical event, such as the Nativity, before unfolding through the performances of the actors, who bring these familiar Gospel narratives to life. Notable for its meticulous recreations of Gustave Doré's iconic biblical illustrations, the film was a technical marvel of its time, showcasing early advancements in special effects and narrative storytelling. Forgoing extensive inter-titles, it relies instead on rich, painterly imagery to convey its story, creating a visually striking and reverent portrayal that became widely influential. Offered here for the very first time by Heritage is an Argentinean one sheet for the film which boldly showcases an intense but undoubtedly iconic image of Jesus wearing the crown of thorns. With some wear, this poster displays edge and fold wear, minor creases, fold and crossfold separation, tears, chipping, a missing upper left corner, staining, and several tape stains/tape stain bleedthrough throughout, including one small strip of plastic tape within the upper background.
