Description
The Divorcee (MGM, 1930). Fine/Very Fine on Linen. Rotogravure One Sheet (27.75" X 42").As they were only printed by MGM for a short time from the 1920s to the early 1930s, rotogravure posters are among some of the rarest in the collecting hobby, and this one sheet has one of the best rotogravure images out of any of the posters we've seen! Offered only once before at Heritage, this one sheet takes full advantage of its monochrome printing for its design, resulting in a striking image completely different from the film's stone litho Style A poster. Originally, leading lady Norma Shearer wasn't in the running to take on the starring role for the film as producer Irving Thalberg, her own husband, didn't think she had enough sex appeal to pull off a portrayal of the flirtatious Jerry Martin. Shearer proved him and the rest of the world wrong with her performance, for which she won the Best Actress Academy Award. A great display piece, this poster has had professional corrections made to fold wear and separation, as well as to small tears and chips. There is a bit of bubbling towards the top right of the poster and the borders have been partially airbrushed.
