Description
Hamlet (Art-Film GmbH, 1921). Very Fine- on Linen. German Poster (27.25" X 37").This early 1920s German film features a remarkable performance by Danish silent film star Asta Nielsen, who founded her own production company to portray a female Hamlet. The concept of a woman taking on the role was hardly new-British actress Sarah Siddons played Hamlet on stage for over thirty years in the 18th century, followed by other legendary performers such as Eleonora Duse, Eva Le Gallienne, and Sarah Bernhardt. But Nielsen's portrayal is strikingly modern and nuanced, far removed from the exaggerated gestures typical of lesser film performances of the era. This stunning poster, just a second-time offering from Heritage Auctions, perfectly captures the subtlety and haunted depth of her interpretation. There are small edge chips and portions of the border have been airbrushed, but this poster is in remarkable condition considering its age and rarity. From the Daniel Strebin Collection.
