Description

Charlie Chaplin in The Thief Catcher (Independant, R-1920s). Fine- on Linen. Trimmed Stock One Sheet (27.75" X 42").
Offered here is a stock one sheet promoting a compilation of Keystone comedy shorts, including Charlie Chaplin. A theater owner in Atlantic City, New Jersey started holding a "Keystone Comedy Day" in 1923 and it proved popular and it expanded into other cities in the rest of the 1920s. The poster features various comedic illustrations of the famed comedian and others by German-American puppeteer Tony Sarg. Originally working as an animator and cartoonist, Sarg also made the jump into helium-filled balloons, even working with Macy's for the Thanksgiving Day parade and designing elaborate animated window displays for the Christmas season. This unique poster has been beautifully restored. Prior, it showed chips and tears, pinholes, paper loss throughout the borders and background, fold separation, and stains. The borders have been airbrushed and touchup has been applied to chips, tears, slight surface paper lifting, and the interior images. A few chips have been replaced, light color touchup has been applied to the upper title, and the linen has been trimmed close to the borders. For any early comedy enthusiast, this poster is a must.
