Description

Mabel's Married Life (Maco Comedies, R-1920s). Very Good/Fine on Linen. One Sheet (28" X 41.25"). Reissue Title: When You're Married.
Mabel Normand, who may best be remembered for her collaborations with Charlie Chaplin and "Fatty" Arbuckle in numerous comedy shorts for Keystone Films in the first half of the 1910s, was a pioneering filmmaker and comedian and helped establish much of the style of the slapstick comedy film both as an actor and director that would continue to be influential well into the sound era. In Mabel's Married Life, Normand had already honed much of her craft both in front of and behind the camera, while Chaplin, still fairly new to comedy filmmaking, took many lessons from her while refining his "Tramp" character and coming to understand how to produce movie comedy. This was one of four "Mabel" comedy shorts Chaplin made with Normand in 1914. His rise to stardom led to many of his early films with Keystone being reissued regularly, and this title was no exception - first re-released as The Squarehead in 1918, the film was then reissued again sometime in the early 1920s as When You're Married, as the one sheet offered here displays. This poster features stunning and graceful artwork of Normand and Chaplin sitting together on a park bench, with their sepia-toned figures contrasting nicely with the soothing greens of the background, an effect assisted by expert restoration of chips, stains, and fold wear within their images with touch-up and airbrushing. Much of the borders have been replaced and airbrushed, and the title has also been airbrushed.
