Description

The Kid Auto Races (R-1910s). Fine+ on Linen. Stock One Sheet (28" X 42.25").
First released in 1914, this short is known as having the first appearance of Chaplin's famous Tramp character on the screen, although his first appearance was actually a scant five days earlier in Making a Living. Many of Charlie Chaplin's early shorts were being regularly re-issued in the late 1910s and early 1920s due to their extreme popularity (in those days, most films were one reel, and a moviegoer would see a number of films, and if a theater didn't include "a Chaplin" in their daily offering, they lost a lot of patrons, so there was great need for constant re-releases of Chaplin's earlier films. Since the distributors knew they were going to release a number of these shorts in a short span, they produced this "stock" one sheet to cover all of the films (they were printed with a blank title area, and then later overprinted with different titles of different Chaplin comedy shorts. There were crossfold separations, a small tear in the lower horizontal fold, chipping along the upper horizontal fold into the image, and pinholes in the corners. Touchup has been applied to the folds.
