Description
The Flying Ace (Norman, 1926). Very Fine+ on Linen. Three Sheet (41.25" X 78.5").When he saw that the major Hollywood studios in the 1920s would almost always only cast people of color in stereotyped demeaning roles, Richard E. Norman of Jacksonville, Florida (who was caucasian) set out to produce films for the underserved market of African American filmgoers. These movies would feature black actors in all the roles, including the heroic leading parts, something never seen in Hollywood. He produced and directed several films, including The Bull-Dogger, Regeneration, and The Flying Ace, his most famous film, and while Black Americans were barred from serving as pilots in the United States Armed Forces until World War II, that didn't stop Norman from depicting a black fighter pilot as the hero. With Captain Billy Stoke, Black audiences were able to see themselves as the aviation film hero for once, fulfilling dreams they were yet to achieve. Audiences also received great inspiration in Kathryn Boyd as Ruth Sawtelle, who was based on noted aviator and stunt pilot Bessie Coleman, the first Black person to earn an international pilot's license. The film provided action, thrills, and danger, especially when an aircraft catches on fire, in the movie, which is depicted in stone litho colorful art on this three sheet. The poster is in excellent condition, displaying only some fold wear and small crossfold separation with light touchup applied. Faint airbrushing has also been applied to the edges of the middle panel.
