Description
The Revenge of Tarzan (Goldwyn, 1920). Fine- on Linen. One Sheet (28" X 41.75").The Revenge of Tarzan was the third film ever produced from the work of Edgar Rice Burroughs, and adapts the first part of his second Tarzan book The Return of Tarzan and Gene Pollar took over the role of Tarzan from Elmo Lincoln. The film was purchased for distribution by Goldwyn Pictures, which spend lavishly on the promotional campaign to ensure the film would be profitable. Exploitation for The Revenge of Tarzan included elaborate lobby and outdoor displays designed by theatre employees or local artists, and either built studio posters into the displays or removed figures from the posters to design around. There is a fascinating piece of trivia about this movie. It was originally titled "The Return of Tarzan" (just as the source novel was), and some posters were printed with that title. But at the last minute, it was changed to the much more dynamic title "The Revenge of Tarzan", and posters were printed with that title instead. This is the exact opposite of the situation that existed with George Lucas' "Return of the Jedi" many decades later, which was originally title "Revenge of the Jedi", but had its title changed at the last minute to make it sound LESS violent! Offered by Heritage for the first time in two decades is one of the few surviving copies of the white text-style one sheet for The Revenge of Tarzan, featuring the eponymous hero wrestling a lion with a chorus of monkeys and a concerned Jane nearby and background artwork in light shades of green, blue, and purple. Note that we refer to this as the "yellow title style". It was printed by the Morgan Litho Company, a major printer of silent movie posters. The other style (the "yellow title style" is virtually the same as this poster, except for the difference in title color, but that poster was printed by the Tooker Litho Company, the other major printer of silent movie posters! This is perhaps the only example where a movie was so popular that the studio had posters for the first release printed at two different printers! Professional restoration has addressed chips and tears in the borders with airbrushing, and slight paper loss in the images of the monkey in the upper left of the image and the top half of Tarzan's body has been replaced and treated with regular and color touch-up, respectively. Furthermore, slight fold wear with separations, minor chips and tears, and pinholes in the interior have either been airbrushed or treated with regular or color touch-up.
