Description
The Spendthrift (Pathé, 1922). Very Fine- on Linen. One Sheet (27" X 41").The Spendthrift is an installment in the series of animated shorts known as Aesop's Film Fables, created by legendary cartoonist Paul Terry. While Terry is not nearly as well-known as Walt Disney, he is one of the most important early cartoon producers, starting in 1913, and he produced an astounding 1,132 animated films through 1957! The Aesop's Film Fables series was launched in 1921 with The Goose That Laid the Golden Eggs. The films met with great success, and young Walt Disney stated that his initial goal was to produce cartoons of quality equal to Terry's. Only the earliest cartoons in this series received full-color one-sheets like this one. In this cartoon, it's early spring, and the broke spendthrift sees a swallow and assumes winter has ended. He goes and sells his coat, only to be left freezing the next day when a cold snap arrives. "One swallow does not make a summer!" Scant touchup has been applied to the folds, pinholes in the borders, a thin splice travels from left border diagonally to top border, fold separation to right border, and 10.5" crease to lower right.
