Description

The Phantom of the Opera (Universal, 1925). Fine. Title Lobby Card (11" X 14").
Appropriately billed as Universal's masterpiece, The Phantom of the Opera served Lon Chaney in his most famous role as one of the first Universal horror monsters who would lay the groundwork for future monster flicks within their cinematic universe. A monumental success for both the Laemmle and Chaney, Laemmle once again looked to Paris for inspiration for his next big production, no doubt inspired first by Notre Dame's Parisian cathedral, and this time it was the opulent backdrop to Gaston Leroux's Le Fantome de l'Opera. Without question, the opera house known as the Opera Garnier plays its own important role in this culturally and historically significant film and is beautifully featured through the center of this extremely scarce title card from the silent feature. Keeping the Phantom's shocking appearance in the movie a secret from filmgoers before they entered the theater, no grotesque images were used for the film's campaign material and this example offers just a glimpse into the picture featuring tastefully placed portraits of the cast beside an interior shot of the opera house. Professionally restored, the title card has received restoration to corner chips, a minor crease within Chaney's portrait, and pinholes near the top border and to the left of Philbin's portrait. The borders have been replaced and airbrushed, and the interior background has also had light airbrushing applied. The title text has benefited from light color touchup. A stellar piece for any serious vintage collector!
