The follow-up to the 1931 horror classic Frankenstein proved that sequels were not necessarily lesser quality vehicles than the original. Four years after the first film, Universal persuaded director James Whale to return along with actors Boris Karloff and Colin Clive to continue the story. Brigitte Helm, who had played the Machine Man in Metropolis, was approached for the role of the Bride, but she had just recently married and didn't want to leave Germany. Elsa Lanchester, who worked for ten days on the film, endured hours of makeup and being wrapped in bandages so tight that her assistant had to feed her--all for about five minutes of screen time. "The most memorable thing I did in that film, I believe, was my screaming. In almost all my movies since, I've been called upon to scream. I don't know if it's by chance, but I would like to think that I'm not hired for that talent alone." Her sibilant, hissing performance was patterned, oddly enough, on the swans of Regent's Park. "They're really very nasty creatures," she said. Boris Karloff reprised his role as the Monster, but with one addition--this time around, he could talk. However, unlike the loquacious creature of Mary Shelley's novel, Karloff's Monster had lines like "Smoke. Good. Good." and "We belong dead." Because of the dialogue, he was unable to remove the partial bridge that had allowed him to achieve the sunken face effect of the first film. Whale said of his star, "That queer, penetrating personality of Karloff's was more important than his shape, which could be easily altered." The fuller faced Monster is evident on this wonderful title card. The card has pinholes, border tears (including one into Karloff's head) and two pieces of archival tape on the verso. The card has been professionally restored to address these issues. The verso and borders have been airbrushed. The three faces, the title, the tagline and Karloff's credit have been touched up. An essential piece from one of the greatest horror films of all time. Fine/Very Fine.
