Description

Rolled Stockings (Paramount, 1927). Very Good/Fine on Linen. One Sheet (27" X 41"). Style B.
Rolled Stockings (presumed lost), a campus romance filmed on location at the University of California, Berkeley also includes footage of crew races between the University of California and the University of Washington. Besides future cult star Louise Brooks, who was then 20 years old, its cast included a few of Paramount's "junior stars" Richard Arlen, James Hall, Nancy Phillips, and El Brendel. The Chicago Tribune named it among the best films of June 1927 and was especially popular in college towns across the country. Louise Brooks was the transcendent dark horse of American silent film, the seductive jewel personified who was only discovered as an acting genius when she arrived in Berlin to film both Diary of a Lost Girl and legendary director G.W. Pabst's Pandora's Box. As a supporting player underused by Paramount, she will have had very few opportunities to be featured in poster art, and this delectably melting image transfixes beyond the scope of its trappings and is one of a handful of poster illustrations that can be counted as ideally defining (and in it Brooks sports her trademark hairdo, with which she would forever be identified). Professional restoration included touchup to tears, staining, fold wear, and misfolds with significant chipping to the upper fold, with paper loss to the left fold to the border and background significant. There was a paper lift to the verso from tape at the top left border. Airbrushing was applied to the borders, background, lettering, interior and heads of Arlen and Hall, and a small area of Brooks' hair.
