Description

Dangerous Curves (Paramount, 1929). Fine/Very Fine on Linen. One Sheet (27" X 40.5") Style B. Silent Version.
Clara Bow is a barebacked rider and tight-rope walker in a love triangle with Richard Arlen and Kay Francis (in her second film and her first in Hollywood - it is usually credited to Bow that Francis shortened her name from Katherine to Kay) set in the world of circus performers under the atmospheric big top. It is notated on the bottom border as being for the silent version - in 1929, there were still a LOT of movie theaters that had not yet converted to sound, and so both sound and silent versions of most movies were distributed, often with different art, and usually with different taglines. In the talking version of this movie, Clara Bow was encouraged to use her own Brooklyn accented speech, and under the supervision of Ernst Lubitsch and with a good script, she was much more confident than in her previous film and debut in talkies, The Wild Party. Looking at the image of Clara Bow on the vibrant poster (which is one with a rare use of "negative space," with the background filled in over Arlen's clothes) it is easy to understand why British author Elinor Glyn in 1927 tagged the young actress the "It Girl" and she had maintained her great appeal two years later! The poster benefited from restoration which included light touchup to folds, chips, scattered pinholes, small tears to the borders, and a splice to the background at the upper left. The borders, folds, and lettering to 'Bow' were airbrushed.
