Description

The Midshipman (MGM, 1925). Fine- on Linen. One Sheet (27.25" X 41").
After achieving moderate success in films such as The Prisoner of Zenda and Scaramouche, Ramon Novarro became a superstar with the success of Ben-Hur in 1925. His dark features made this Mexican born actor the ideal Latin lover and a worthy rival to Rudolph Valentino. Offered here is a one sheet for The Midshipman, released months before the premiere of Ben-Hur and the first time Novarro was billed above the title, the official mark of achieving true stardom. The romantic drama follows an upperclassman as he befriends a younger student and romances his sister, much to the displeasure of her wealthy fiancé. Much of the film was shot on location at the United States Naval Academy, with the cooperation of the Department of the Navy. The one sheet offered here features a great stone litho close-up image of Novarro, looking quite dashing in his academy uniform. Touchup has been applied to fold wear, chips, pinholes, tears through the left face, and paper loss in the top left ear that extends into the blue background. The white background and left side of the blue background have been airbrushed. With restoration addressing most of the issues, this rare one sheet now displays beautifully.
