Description
The Eagle (United Artists, 1925). Good+ on Linen. Three Sheet (41" X 81").After becoming a superstar with The Sheik in 1920, Rudolph Valentino diversified with other kinds of roles, but did not have the same success as with the Latin lover he played to perfection. With this movie, set in Imperial Russia, Valentino took on an action role similar to those Douglas Fairbanks was having so much success with, playing a masked avenger who falls from favor with Catherine the Great and has his lands stolen. This was his first film after joining United Artists, the studio that had released Douglas Fairbanks' The Mask of Zorro and Robin Hood. The Eagle marked a much-needed comeback, giving Valentino as much popularity with gentleman audiences as he already had with the ladies. Offered here is an exceedingly rare three sheet, almost certainly the only surviving copy. Prior to restoration, the poster showed chips, fold wear, creases, tears, pinholes, stains, which have had touchup applied. The middle panel showed significant paper loss, with extensive airbrushing and color touchup to the inner lining of the cloak and the right background. In addition, the borders have also been airbrushed, and there is some lifting where the middle panel meets the top panel. Expert restoration has beautifully resurrected this incredible poster.
