Stranger on the Third Floor (RKO, 1940). Very Fine+ on Linen. One Sheet (27" X 41").
Heralded as the first true film noir, director Boris Ingster's landmark Stranger on the Third Floor established much of the genre's cinematic grammar, with his use of low camera angles, diagonal lines, shadowy lighting, voice-over narration, and dream sequences as well as its vocabulary of urban alienation with a wrongly accused protagonist desperately trying to clear his name. Many of these elements appear in the poster design itself. Peter Lorre, who came to international prominence in the proto-noir M, once again assumes the role of a mysterious, menacing figure as "The Stranger." Backed on linen, the poster previously exhibited light edge and fold wear. The title of the film was written in ink on the verso, and just barely bleeds through in the "T" of Lorre's credit.
