Description
The Great Love (Artcraft, 1918). Very Good/Fine on Linen. One Sheet (28.25" X 42").This melodrama came during D.W. Griffith's brief period working with Artcraft Pictures in the late 1910s following Intolerance and The Birth of a Nation. Griffith and his frequent cinematographer G.W. Bitzer traveled to England to shoot footage of the royal family and British aristocracy originally intended for his previous film Hearts of the World, but was instead used for The Great Love. This movie is about a young American who wants to fight in World War I before the U.S. enters the war, so he enlists Canada and is sent to England, and then the front lines in France, where he is injured and he meets a beautiful young nurse and his plans change! This one sheet for The Great Love, likely one of the only copies in existence, offered by Heritage for the first time showcases stars Lillian Gish and Robert Harron in the midst of an intimate conversation. Expert restoration has addressed paper loss in the upper left corner, left border into the left edge of the image, and the right segment of the lower horizontal fold and chips in the top and left borders, Harron's image, and Griffith's credit by replacing the missing paper and delicately applying airbrushing and/or touch-up. Much of the borders have been airbrushed, and slight scuffs in the title and the credits of Henry Walthall and Maxfield Stanley have received light touch-up.
