Description
The Birth of a Nation (David W. Griffith Corp., 1915). Fine on Cardstock. Window Card (13.75" X 21").D. W. Griffith's epic tale of the American Civil War and Reconstruction period is recognized as a watershed moment in motion picture history. Introducing numerous technical and artistic innovations to the medium, the pioneering film established much of the visual language of cinema with elements such as close-ups, fade-outs, and multiplane action. Starring silent screen legends Lillian Gish, Mae Marsh, Miriam Cooper, Henry B. Walthall, the film's immense ensemble cast included future directors John Ford, Raoul Walsh, and Joseph Henabery, and the record-setting box office returns allowed movie moguls Jesse L. Lasky and Louis B. Mayer to establish themselves in the industry. An essential title for any serious collection of the foundations of modern cinema, this exceedingly rare window card has had touchup to the top imprint area, the robed figure, the tops of the horses, and creasing at the poster's bottom edge.
