Description

Beau Geste (Paramount, 1939). Folded, Very Fine/ Near Mint. One Sheet (27" X 41") Style B.
Based on P.C. Wren's popular 1924 novel, the Gary Cooper-led version of Beau Geste is the second of three screen adaptations (the first, produced just two years after the book was published, featured Ronald Colman in the title role). It tells the story of three brothers who enlist in the French Foreign Legion and face brutal hardships and betrayal in the Sahara Desert. The film follows the siblings as they endure harsh conditions and an oppressive sergeant (played by an Academy Award-nominated Brian Donlevy) while uncovering a mystery involving a stolen treasure. Beau Geste was successful upon release and helped to solidify the late 1930s as a golden age of adventure films. When the United States Post Office decided in 1990 to commemorate four films released in 1939 with a set of stamps, they placed Beau Geste alongside The Wizard of Oz, Gone with the Wind, and Stagecoach. Interestingly, Beau Geste is the only one of the four to receive no major Oscar nominations; its inclusion was certainly based in part on Gary Cooper's distinctive visage, captured so perfectly on this poster. Beau Geste one sheets are scarce in either design, but this wonderful Style B is much harder to find than the Style A. This excellently designed and printed poster also remains in truly astonishing (virtually) unhandled, unrestored original condition, exhibiting only a trace of crossfold separations, a fine 3" surface scratch in background near center right, a clean pinhole in each corner, a few nearly invisible surface dimples, and tiny cracks at extreme margins.
