Saul Bass (1920-1996) was not only one of the great graphic designers of the mid-20th century but the undisputed master of film title design thanks to his collaboration with Alfred Hitchcock, Otto Preminger and Martin Scorsese. Here is one of his rarest posters, an 'audition' poster he designed for the l957 Otto Preminger epic, Saint Joan, based upon the life of Joan of Arc. Jean Seberg first rose to prominence at the age of seventeen after she was selected from over three thousand hopefuls, drawn by this poster, to play Joan of Arc in Preminger's controversial biopic. This beautiful full-bleed poster which uses the famous Bass design and has his printed signature in the upper left, had some fold wear and slight paper loss in the upper vertical foldline. The poster has been beautifully conserved and now displays very well. Fine/Very Fine on Linen.
