Description

The Adventures of King Pausole (Films Sonores Tobis, 1933). French Double Grande (61" X 90.5").
Based on Pierre Louÿs's 1901 novel, Les Aventures du Roi Pausole, this comedy was directed by Alexis Granowsky and released in both English and French in 1933. The French version features André Berley as King and Josette Day, while the English release stars silent film luminary Emil Jannings, and is also known as The Merry Monarch. Loosely based on King Solomon and his many wives, this is the tale of a monarch who has a wife for each day of the year, including an extra one for the leap years. French Surrealist painter, illustrator and designer Félix Labisse (1905-1982) began creating posters for theater and film in 1931. This country-of-origin French double grande is an extraordinary example of Labisse's work, depicting a series of bathing beauties (perhaps all the king's wives) donning swimming costumes with the royal "P" sewn onto their suits. Labisse employs bright reds and cool blues, two colors the artist would use extensively later in his career. Not often found at auction, this poster is a work of art to behold. Linenbacked, the piece shows bleed through from writing on the verso in the bottom border, tears in the bottom left image area, creasing, and chips and tears in the top border. Fine+ on Linen.
