Description
Asphalt (UFA, 1929). (2) German (19" X 57") Posters. Directed by Joe May, one of the founders of German cinema, this film is considered one of the last great German Expressionist films of the 1920s. The film is set in Berlin, and the story tells of a well-dressed woman (Betty Amann) who steals a precious stone from a jewelry shop. She tries to seduce the policeman (Gustav Frohlich) who catches her, and he gradually succumbs to her charms. Gustav Frohlich, two years earlier, had starred in Fritz Lang's "Metropolis." This pair of gorgeous stone lithograph posters designed by German artist Alfred Herrmann and printed by the Berlin printer August Scherl, are perhaps the only German posters known to exist from this film. The posters were featured in the German traveling exhibit "UFA Film Posters" which the Academy exhibited.
