Description
Hurrell Portfolio III ed. IX/XXIII (George Hurrell, 1979-1980). Very Fine. George Hurrell Signed and Hand-Numbered Limited Edition Oversized Photographs (10) with Portfolio (Photos: 16" X 20", Portfolio: 17.25" X 21.5").George Hurrell's Hurrell III portfolio is a striking collection of ten 16 x 20-inch museum-quality gelatin silver, double-weight prints, developed from the original negatives under Hurrell's personal supervision. Each photograph was hand-developed using traditional darkroom techniques, ensuring the dramatic lighting and tonal richness that define his iconic style. The suite features some of Hurrell's finest work in the glamour portrait genre, including images of Anna May Wong (c. 1938), Charles Boyer (c. 1938), Joan Crawford at home (c. 1932), Jascha Heifetz, Ann Sheridan (c. 1938), Gilbert Roland (c. 1939), James Cagney (Boy Meets World), John Barrymore (Grand Hotel), Veronica Lake (I Wanted Wings), and Gene Tierney (Laura). Each print is signed by Hurrell and marked with a handwritten edition number ("IX/XXIII"). In the oversized 16" X 20" format, Hurrell Portfolio III was produced in three different editions. This was the most limited and exclusive of the three, hand numbered by the photographer in Roman numerals, with only 23 examples produced. The set is housed in a cloth and board clamshell box embossed with Hurrell III. This particular portfolio was sealed prior to our opening for catalog photography and the prints exhibit only trace handling. The introductory cover page shows some toning.
