Description

Ben-Hur (MGM, 1925). Fine on Cardstock. Australian Pre-War Horizontal Daybill (14.75" X 39.5"). Fred Powis Artwork.
This film, adapted from the great novel by General Lew Wallace, was one of the most ambitious productions of the silent era, with a staggering $4,000,000.00 budget that nearly bankrupted MGM, the production began in Italy but was moved to California after delays and cost overruns. The legendary chariot race, filmed in Culver City and overseen by second-unit director B. Reeves Eason, employed over 40 cameras with 100,000 extras and was so dangerous that a stuntman was seriously injured during filming. Leading man Ramon Novarro wore a specially designed leather helmet under his wig during the race to prevent any injury to himself. Both John Ford and William Wyler (who would go one to direct the classic 1959 version, winning the Oscar for Best Director among another 10 wins) worked on this film. Presented here is an amazing horizontal Daybill featuring an image of the colosseum and chariot race that thrilled millions. The poster has been mounted to board, there are two chips to the bottom border and another at top center; a 2.5-inch tear at top left, a tape pull at top right and some stains or smudges in the border areas as well as some light wear along the center vertical fold. A play date has been written in grease pencil. It is an amazing find and you would be unlikely to find another. A first time offering at Heritage. Don't miss out, bid now!
