Description

The Crimson Skull (Norman, 1922). Fine/Very Fine on Linen. Six Sheet (78.5" X 78.5").
When he saw that the major Hollywood studios in the 1920s would almost always only cast people of color in stereotyped demeaning roles, Richard E. Norman of Jacksonville, Florida (who was a white man) set out to produce films for the underserved market of African American filmgoers, that would have black actors in all the roles, including the heroic leading ones, something never seen in Hollywood. He produced and directed several films, including Regeneration, The Flying Ace, The Bull-Dogger, and this film, The Crimson Skull. The Bull-Dogger and The Crimson Skull makes up all the film appearances of bull rider Bill Pickett, who came to fame by pioneering the bulldogging technique of steer wrestling and playing in the popular 101 Ranch Wild West show alongside other future film stars in Tom Mix, Will Rogers, and others. Both films feature Pickett, lead actress Anita Bush, and character actor Steve "Peg" Reynolds, and stand as two of the few Westerns to primarily feature Black actors. Pickett appears dressed in his character's full-body skeleton costume with Bush and co-star Lawrence Chenault chained up during the film's climactic bloodletting scene in this six sheet for The Crimson Skull, which Heritage offers for the first time in 5 years. The poster had some chips and tears throughout the image and borders, slight fold wear with separations, and smudges in the lower lettering; parts of the borders were airbrushed, and all of the interior issues received touch-up.
