Description

The Thief of Bagdad (Parva, R- Early 1950s). Folded, Fine-. Italian 2 - Fogli (39" X 55") Alberto Spagnoli Artwork.
Making its Heritage debut, this Italian poster showcases the vibrant illustrations of Alberto Spagnioli for the beautiful fantasy feature, The Thief of Bagdad. This opulent retelling of a familiar tale, starring Conrad Veidt as Jaffar, Sabu as Abu, and Rex Ingram as the Djinn, garnered three well-deserved Academy Awards, for Best Color Art Direction, Best Color Cinematography, and Best Special Effects. Although plagued with production problems, including a forced relocation from Great Britain to Hollywood due to the Blitz, and producer Alexander Korda's hiring and firing of six different directors, the result is a masterful piece of filmmaking, as enjoyable today as it was nearly seventy years ago. Signs of usage found in this poster include fold wear, pinholes, creasing, and some tears. There are small chips in the borders and folds, as well as some paper loss above the lower center crossfold into Sabu's leg with splices. Also apparent is staining, soft surface rippling, and slivers of paper loss at the edges. Some of the tears have light touchup applied. There are several strips of paper tape on the verso as well as some pieces of paper tape on the front. This poster, which we believe to be from the 16mm release, has retained bright color over the years and should be of interest to many collectors.
