Description
The Hill Collection (Universal Film Manufacturing, 1910s). Very Good. One Sheet (83) (27" X 41").Carl Laemmle moved his studio, the Universal Film Manufacturing Company, to California in 1912, and founded Universal City, and by 1914 it was the one of the leading movie studios in the U.S. The collection of original one sheets of film shorts assembled here is primarily from a two-year period (1913-14) during which Lois Weber was the most esteemed, highest-paid director at any studio, and by 1914, during which she directed 27 films including, with Phillips Smalley, The Merchant of Venice, becoming the first woman to direct a feature film in the U.S. Weber wrote the photoplay and directed two films represented here, also acting as the lead in the first - Memories (1913) and An Episode (1914) - both which feature Phillips Smalley, her husband, and collaborator. The transition to the feature-length film as the industry standard occurred between 1910 and 1915 when films went from an average of eighteen minutes to seventy-five minutes, or five reels or more. This was because feature films could command much higher admission prices than a selection of shorts. Most of the short films represented on the posters in this collection are now lost. Matinee idols of the 1910s included are Edwin August, Francis X. Bushman, Wallace Reid, Florence Lawrence, Ford Sterling, and Pearl White, among the first exemplars of the burgeoning film industry. Discovered in a movie theater in Kentucky, this collection is that rare find where a previously unknown trove survived intact and unmolested for a century, all from a single provenance, something that almost never happens with any sort of antique or collectible. This truly astounding collection includes the following one sheets:

In remarkably well preserved and in most cases, original, unrestored condition, these posters exhibit a surprisingly narrow range of condition issues such as paper loss, fold wear and fold separation (some complete separation), light soiling, chips, pinholes, and tears. Colors remain undimmed in most respects, with a conservative grade range of Very Good to Very Fine. Some have been partially restored and are in museum condition.
Heritage Auctions provides as much information as possible but strongly encourages in-person inspection.
