Description

Creature from the Black Lagoon (Universal International, 1954). Very Fine on Linen. One Sheet (27" X 41"). Albert Kallis Artwork.
Filming Creature from the Black Lagoon involved innovative techniques for its time, most notably for the underwater scenes. The movie was shot in black-and-white 3D, with underwater sequences filmed at Wakulla Springs and Silver Springs in Florida, chosen for their crystal-clear waters. Actor Ricou Browning, who performed the underwater Gill-man scenes, held his breath for extended periods, as scuba gear would have been visible. The Gill-man's costume was crafted from latex and foam rubber applied in pieces, with no easy way to remove it, making it physically demanding for the actors. The 3D photography required careful coordination of camera setups, adding to the film's technical complexity. Actress and animator Millicent Patrick created the design for the creature. Backed to linen, the poster has minimal touchup to address fold wear and small or minute chips to the fold junctions and pinholes at the corners. Additionally, there is a series of pinholes to the linen in the upper selvage. Thanks to these efforts, the poster displays wonderfully.
