Description
The Ghost of Slumber Mountain (World Pictures, 1918). Fine+ on Linen. Three Sheet (41" X 81").This prehistoric-era marvel was co-written and directed by Willis H. O'Brien, a pioneer in special effects work and stop motion animation who in his films crafted some of the finest fantasy creatures of the early 20th century, most notably King Kong in 1933! Originally filmed in three reels, co-writer and producer Herbert M. Dawley had The Ghost of Slumber Mountain significantly cut down to one reel and released it as a short subject. Its success far exceeded expectations, quickly coming to overshadow any of the features it was programmed with. The film went on to sell at record-breaking prices for its length following its premiere, and enjoyed an extended release well into 1919 as the featured attraction. Before making this film, O'Brien had worked on other dinosaur-themed shorts for Thomas Edison and continued to work in special effects in Hollywood through the early 1960s. Although he is best remembered today for his work on King Kong (and its predecessor, The Lost World), The Ghost of Slumber Mountain is a landmark achievement that stands as a highly influential entry in the science fiction-fantasy film canon. This The Ghost of Slumber Mountain three sheet is equally as impressive. Reaching the auction block for only the second time with Heritage, this outstanding example is extremely rare and features the film's climactic battle between the stegosaurus and Tyrannosaurus Rex dinosaurs. Airbrushing of the borders and much of the background of the interior has been used to remedy slight chips, tears, splices, and image fading, and minor paper loss within some crossfold separation above the T. rex has been replaced and treated with touch-up. Parts of the folds, the "O" in "motion" at the top of the poster, and the "F" of "of" at the bottom have also received touch-up, parts of the title have had touch-up and airbrushing delicately applied, and the linen has been trimmed to the borders.
