Description

The Shock (Universal, 1923). Very Good/Fine. Standee (11.75" X 19.5").
Based on the William Dudley Pelley story The Pit of the Golden Dragon, this Universal production presents Lon Chaney in a lurid melodrama with direction by Lambert Hillyer. Lon Chaney plays a mysterious disabled man from Chinatown who is an accomplice of equally mysterious underworld figure "Queen Ann". This is perhaps the only one of his films where Lon Chaney, who almost always played a villain "gets the girl" at the film's conclusion! Principal photography for this movie took place just after Chaney wrapped Oliver Twist, and would lead the actor into one of his greatest pictures that same year, The Hunchback of Notre Dame. While all movie promotional material for early 1920s movies are very difficult to obtain, promotional material of any kind from this specific movie is beyond rare, making this incredible special exhibitor standee for the film an incredible find! Featuring the emerging master of the macabre, Lon Chaney is illustrated above the wreckage from an earthquake at the thrilling conclusion of the film, which depicted the San Francisco earthquake of 1906. Professionally backed on paper, the original lobby stand leg has been reattached and the background interior and lower imprint area have been airbrushed. Very minor pinholes and subtle creasing are still slightly visible within the standee in addition to slight warping.
