Description

Dracula (Universal, 1931). Fine/Very Fine. Lobby Card (11" X 14"). Tryptich Card.
Directed by the visionary Tod Browning and immortalized by Bela Lugosi's mesmerizing performance, Dracula stands as a towering pillar of horror cinema and a defining entry in Universal Pictures' pantheon of classic monster films. Rather than drawing directly from Bram Stoker's 1897 novel, the film adapts the popular 1924 stage play by Hamilton Deane and revised by John L. Balderston, which distilled the gothic tale into a more theatrical and atmospheric experience tailored for early 20th-century audiences. With his hauntingly measured cadence, thick Hungarian accent, and unnerving, hypnotic gaze, Lugosi's Count Dracula redefined the image of the vampire for the silver screen and the cultural imagination. Though the film features no visible fangs, no explicit biting, and not a drop of onscreen blood, it conjures dread through suggestion, shadow, and mood, cementing its place in horror history through atmosphere rather than gore. Lugosi's performance catapulted him to stardom, yet the role became both a blessing and a lifelong burden. Despite his newfound fame, he never fully escaped Dracula's shadow. Nonetheless, his portrayal established a cinematic blueprint: the elegant, mysterious, and terrifying vampire-an archetype that would dominate the genre for generations to come. The unrestored card shows a slight bit of color fading, typical for a card this age. There is a pinhole in the left center border, slight edge toning, light surface scuffs, and faint smudges. There are three small strips of paper tape on the verso.
