Description

Two Men in Manhattan (Columbia Films, 1959). Fine/Very Fine on Linen. French Moyenne (22.5" X 31.5") Georges Kerfyser Artwork.
One of France's finest directors, Jean-Pierre Melville is perhaps best known for his directorial work on pictures such as Army of Shadows (1969) and Le Samouraï (1967), but long before either of those films were made, there was Two Men in Manhattan, the exceptional 1959 crime thriller. It follows a French journalist and his photographer as they navigate the nocturnal streets of New York City in search of a missing French diplomat, uncovering intrigue and moral ambiguity along the way. Not often appearing in his own movies, Melville takes up the mantel of lead actor and protagonist, delivering a captivating performance, with this country-of-origin French Moyenne inspiring torrents of awe with Georges Kerfyser's Art Deco design. Touchup along the folds and within the upper background has addressed fold wear, creases, small fold and crossfold separation, a couple paper lifts, a few minor chips, and some tears.
