Description

Freaks (Excelsior, R-1949) & Devil's Harvest (Continental, 1942). Overall Very Good/Fine. Lobby Cards (2) (11" X 14").
Though directed by Tod Browning of London After Midnight and Dracula fame, MGM quickly shelved this film following its initial 1932 release. Exploitation film distributor, Dwain Esper, bought the rights and traveled the country in the late 1940s showing the film under the original, and alternate titles, such as Forbidden Love and Nature's Mistakes. The controversial movie later became a cult classic on the midnight screening circuit. Also included is Devil's Harvest. The 1942 Ray Test marijuana exploitation melodrama ("The smoke of Hell!") is a tale of the marijuana drug traffic among high school students, starring June Doyle, John Clayton, Leo Anthony, Ben Barlow, and Ed Murray. Note that any posters or lobby cards from this movie are rare and very desired by collectors. Note that it is also difficult to know if items from this movie are from the very first release in 1942, or from the many continuous releases of it over the next few years, when the movie had "roadshow" releases throughout America in little towns. We identify all the items as being from 1942, but the ones that are two color, as offered here, may be from soon after. The Freaks card shows moderate handling and wear throughout, quite typical for material from this release, which included myriads of screenings back and forth across the country for several years running, including crinkling, smudges, pinholes, a 4" internal tear stabilized with kraft tape on verso, narrow strips of kraft tape surrounding verso borders plus a large strip that bears no obvious purpose, and an added tiny credit strip for Wallace Ford. Devil's Harvest has occasional background creases, small edge chipping at right and upper margins, but otherwise remains relatively free of handling or wear.
