Description

The General Died at Dawn (Paramount, 1936). Fine on Linen. French Grande (45" X 61.5") Boris Grinsson Artwork.
The dramatic red and gold hues of this brilliant French grande for The General Died at Dawn frame the intense gazes of Gary Cooper and Madeleine Carroll above a dynamic scene of advancing soldiers, capturing the film's blend of romantic intrigue and looming conflict. The 1936 adventure drama follows an American mercenary, played by Cooper, who becomes entangled in a perilous mission to stop a ruthless Chinese warlord from acquiring weapons to fuel his violent ambitions. Directed by Lewis Milestone, the film is known for its innovative cinematography and politically charged narrative, reflecting growing Western anxieties about global instability and marking one of Hollywood's early engagements with themes of imperialism and international unrest. A first time offer from Heritage, light touchup has been applied to parts of the folds to address fold wear, creases, and minute misfolds, while slightly noticeable replacement has restored a few minor chips at the crossfolds. Many of these flaws, as well as smudges, scuffs, minor toning, and image ghosting, remain visible. Additionally, the poster is lighting slightly from the linen at parts of the borders and there is some staining on the linen verso.
