Description

Merry Go Round (Universal, 1923). Title Lobby Card and Scene Cards (4) (11" X 14").
Here's a lot for all who love silent film and the many intrigues that beset the Hollywood colony as the 1920s slowly sorted out the exact structure of the film industry. The director's name on the title card is Rupert Julian, but the film was actually imagined, cast, and directed by Erich Von Stroheim. Irving Thalberg installed Julian to "finish up," after facing another mega dollar overrun (a la Foolish Wives). Thalberg made good this time to get rid of the megalomaniac star/director. For anyone who loves Stroheim, this film is essential study. The lobby cards are done in a beautiful shimmering gold ink that has held up to this day. The title card with the cast whirling around the title is an inspired concept for the early 1920s. The scene cards with their sumptuous settings, costumes, and drapings, are pure Stroheim. There is only light edge wear on three cards, and light corner bumps in the bottom. Very Fine-.
