Horror of Dracula (Universal Film, Inc., 1958). French Grande (47" X 63").
Christopher Lee, as Bram Stoker's undead vampire, Count Dracula, carries one of his many brides over the threshold of his castle. It's an evil spin on the traditional marriage custom and perfect for this striking poster. This French Grande has long been considered one of the best posters created for Hammer Films first entry in their series of Dracula films. And due to the popularity of these films, Hammer would re-establish themselves as a major production studio whose horror pictures would dominate movie theatres from the late 1950s through the 1970s. Lee appeared in a total of seven Dracula films for Hammer (and once for a German film production) and was so identified in the role that it solidified his reputation as a Master of Horror and made him a natural to play monsters in dozens of other horror films. In England (the film's country-of-origin) it was simply titled Dracula, however, in order to avoid confusion in the US with Universal's Dracula starring Bela Lugosi, the film was retitled Horror of Dracula. This French title Le Cauchemar de Dracula literally translates to The Nightmare of Dracula, however, what's interesting is that the English title printed underneath (a common practice) is Horror of Dracula-- the title of the US release- as Universal once again was trying to avoid confusion. The poster had color touch-up to all the fold lines and after restoration there have been a few additional cracks and stress lines that now show on the poster. There had been a chip off of the upper left corner, a nick in the top border, small chips and tears in the right border and a chip in the bottom border--all of which have been repaired through restoration. There is also a minor warp to the linen and the surface has been covered with a protective glossy film. Art by Guy Gerard Noel. Very Good/Fine on Linen.
