Description
La Belle et la Bete (DisCina, 1946). French Grande (45.75" X 62.25").As beautiful as the film itself, this country-of-origin French Grande is a sight to behold. Artist Jean-Denis Malcles supplies the touch of enchantment here, inspired by the picture that was so effortlessly brought to the screen by director Jean Cocteau in 1946. At the time La Belle et la Bete (Beauty and the Beast) was filmed, Cocteau was known primarily as a poet and a painter. It's no wonder that after the film was released he instantly earned the distinction as one of the finest French directors of his era. As a further testament to the director's creative instincts, Cocteau was forced to use several different types of film stock during the making of the picture due to post-war shortages, later commenting that the differing visual textures added to the atmospheric effect. Josette Day and Jean Marais are endearing as the title characters, and La Belle et la Bete is still one of the best French films ever made. The linen has been trimmed to the border, and restoration has been applied to a tear at the top left, fold wear, and a small cross fold chip. An irresistible find! Very Fine on Linen.
