Description

Anatomy of a Murder (Columbia, 1959). Fine/Very Fine on Linen. One Sheet (27" X 41"). Saul Bass Artwork.
Small town lawyer Paul Biegler (James Stewart) defends unsympathetic murder suspect Lieutenant Frederick Manion (Ben Gazzara) in this Otto Preminger mystery that co-stars Lee Remick, Arthur O'Connell, Eve Arden, and George C. Scott. The film is based on a 1958 novel by Robert Traver, a pen name of Michigan Supreme Court Justice John D. Voelker. In 1952 Voelker served as the defense attorney in a real-life murder case which directly inspired Anatomy of a Murder. The film garnered six Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture and Best Actor, but lost to Ben-Hur and Charlton Heston, respectively. The film is also fondly remembered for its Duke Ellington soundtrack, which won three Grammy Awards (including Best Soundtrack Album). This poster features iconic Saul Bass artwork which, along with his work on Vertigo and Man with the Golden Arm, represents what is arguably Bass's most critically acclaimed period. Small faults include splitting along the folds, paper thins, pinholes, edge wear, and a few scattered water spots in the lower right quadrant. There is a bit of paper loss that has been repaired in Preminger's name. The linen has been trimmed to the poster's edge. Professional restoration has resulted in a poster that displays beautifully. An iconic Mid-century poster. Property from a Distinguished Collection.
