Mata Hari (MGM, 1931). Very Fine- on Linen. Pre-War Belgian (23.5" X 33").
Greta Garbo plays the infamous Dutch courtesan, dancer, and World War I spy who uses her allure to seduce military officers and gather intelligence. Living in Paris, she becomes entangled with a young Russian pilot, Lieutenant Rosanoff (played by Ramon Navarro), and falls in love. Torn between her duties as a German agent and her personal feelings, she finds herself targeted by French intelligence. Ultimately betrayed and tried for espionage, she meets a tragic end. The classic film was a major hit for MGM and a major hit for Garbo who got excellent reviews for her role. The gowns designed by Adrian were critiqued by the Legion of Decency and forced many edits for different regions. Backed to linen, touchup has been applied within Garbo's left shoulder and breast (the right side of her image), as well as the white background areas and portions of the borders in the upper section. These were handled expertly and the poster presents wonderfully. Only a second time offering at Heritage.
