Description

La Dame aux Camélias (Le Film d'Art, 1911). French Double Grande (63" X 93.75") Dreville Artwork.
Based on the novel by the younger Alexandre Dumas, the son of Alexandre Dumas of The Three Musketeers and The Count of Monte Cristo fame, André Calmettes and Louis Mercanton's La Dame aux Camille features acclaimed French stage actress Sarah Bernhardt reprising her famous theatrical role as the ill-fated courtesan. It's more than a little difficult to believe that the beautiful Bernhardt was 69 years old when filming this picture, retaining her elegance and grace long after most actresses would have retired. One of more than twenty film adaptations of Dumas' most famous work, this 1912 production met praise from audiences still enthralled by Bernhardt's considerable talents, encouraging the actress to continue in the film industry despite her considerably unfavorable view of the medium. Foreshadowing the courtesan's tragic fate, French artist Dreville brings the experimental style of the early 1900s to this literary classic. Presented for the first time at Heritage, touchup has been applied to the folds, small tears in the borders, and small clean tears in Sarah Bernhardt's face. Still visible is staining in the borders and toning. Fine/Very Fine on Linen.
